Not Just A Card
Items displayed in not just a shop

Today marks the end of Just A Card’s Indie Week; the national campaign which reminds us that every purchase from an independent designer, maker, gallery or shop, no matter how small, can help with the survival of small businesses. That’s right, even if that purchase is just a card!

We’re celebrating this fantastic campaign with a close up on some of our designer and maker Christmas cards. This Christmas we urge you to visit not just a shop  – even if it’s to buy just a card!

So why visit? Our collection is exclusively made up of Fine Art and products by students and graduates from University of the Arts London, so every time you make a purchase, you’re both supporting us as a business as well as our designers, makers and Fine Artists. We’ve been open just over a year, so it’s early days but so far we’ve stocked 700+ different product lines by 84 different artists and designers – providing a vital launch-pad for their businesses. 900+ students and graduates have benefitted from attending our programme of events and workshops, which we often get industry and graduate speakers in to run. It’s great to see that current students and very recent graduates have the confidence to submit their work for sale in not just a shop as a result of the support they’ve received through these workshops!

Enough about us, here’s a few of the Christmas cards we’ve got in store.

Know someone who loves their movies? This card by Robbie Porter features some Christmas classics. Who doesn’t love cosying up on the sofa and watching Gremlins?

Robbie is a Scottish illustrator currently getting lost in London. His practice is idea-led with a focus on creating playful yet meaningful work. He graduated from Camberwell College of Art in 2013, with a master’s degree in Illustration.

After finished his BA he got a job in a Printmakers Gallery, which had a shop. He started making things to sell there and very slowly got involved in markets, fairs and subsequently with shops and wholesalers.

Crispin Finn have a beautiful range of cards and tea towels which feature a few favourite drinks, along with classic movie quotes and the full recipe on the reverse of the card. This Mulled Wine card was created specially for the festive season. The card is two spot colour, lithographically, printed on 100% recycled white card and comes complete with a brown kraft envelope.

Crispin Finn is the pseudonym for creative duo Anna Fidalgo and Roger Kelly. Anna studied BA Design for Communication, Chelsea College of Arts (2005) and Roger studied MA Fine Art Painting, Chelsea College of Arts (1997).

Founded in 2007 after they realised they shared a love of screen printing, design and collecting ephemera, they create a range of products that include stationery, hand printed editions and homeware.

This unique card by Purpose & Worth with winter scenes of ice skating on a lake capture the essence of the season in a frosty, serene, mountain landscape. It’s a soft-white uncoated card, 324gsm, that is carbon neutral and made using windpower!

The founder Daphne Diamant graduated from MA Design Studies at Central Saint Martins in 2006, before going on to launch her own design-led stationery brand Purpose & Worth etc

Originally from Canada, Daphne worked as a graphic designer and creative director before setting up Purpose & Worth etc, in a desire to return to a more authentic and hands-on practice of illustrative storytelling. The brand’s designs are inspired by her love of typography, modern decorative arts and print techniques.

We’ve got Christmas cards by UAL students as well as graduates thanks to our annual Christmas Card Competition, which allows students to have their designs printed, packaged and sold in our shop.

This year’s winners were

Kalya Lui, BA (Hons) Illustation student, studying at Camberwell College of Art

MA Character Animation student Theresa Haas, currently studying at Central Saint Martins

Yunong Xie, MA Illustration and Visual Media student, studying at the London College of Communication

MA Character Animation student Katie Chan, currently studying at Central Saint Martins
