Painter Becky Hanney graduated from Wimbledon College of Arts’ BA (Hons) Fine Art: Painting course in 2017. She describes her paintings as “abstract, infinite dream worlds of novelty, mystery and pleasure”. Three of her pieces are currently for sale in not just a shop.

What was the inspiration behind the piece(s) in not just a shop?

The pieces are all explorations of the same space. The painting technique I have developed involves abstractly building up colour and form with automatic mark making; supressing conscious control and allowing my unconscious mind to take over the creative process.

I add detail to create an illusion of three-dimensional space, which I like to call ‘fractal abstraction’. Viewers perceive landscapes and creatures in my work no matter how the pieces are oriented, which is why I now prefer a circular form. The inspiration for me is the pleasure of painting and following my excitement to discover the beautiful worlds I can create and lose myself in.

Who as influenced your work the most?

Whilst studying at Wimbledon, I really enjoyed researching work by early abstract artists, such as Frantisek Kupka. I am currently influenced by the visionary artists, such as Jonathan Solter.

When did you know that you wanted to pursue an artist career?

I don’t recall a time when I decided to become an artist, instead I gradually gained the self-confidence to follow and commit to my practice and see where it might take me.

What do you want viewers to take away from your work?

I hope they receive the feelings I am trying to convey; empty yet full, silly yet solid. The paintings have such a presence, yet nothing sensible to say. For me, they give a sense of satisfaction and clarity.

What is the most inspiring place or exhibition you’ve been to in London?

I went to a show featuring Georgiana Houghton’s work at the Courtauld Gallery in 2016. She was an exceptional artist, creating abstract artwork in the late 1800s, preceding and completely isolated from the Avant-Garde of the early 1900s. The pieces were bewildering to the public of the day, but to me they resonated deeply. Seeing this show helped me trust my intuition and not worry what anyone else is doing.
