Starting a creative career can feel daunting. But at University of the Arts London, you’re not on your own. not just a shop is here to be your launchpad—providing a crucial platform, mentorship, and hands-on support to help emerging creatives turn their passion into a profession.
Take it from Bhairavi Yogasivam, an Architecture graduate from Central Saint Martins who transformed her design skills into a thriving freelance career. Her journey shows how talent, when paired with the right opportunities, can lead to incredible places.
It all began with a live brief…
Bhairavi’s story with us started during her second year, when she took part in our Home live brief. She designed a set of napkins that sold out—an exciting first glimpse into the world of product design.
Reflecting on that time, Bhairavi says: “I joined to learn more about the design and production process. It was so different from my architecture course, and I thought it would be a great way to expand my portfolio. Little did I know how much I’d love it and want to pursue this kind of work after university! The team was incredibly supportive, and I learned more than I could’ve imagined.”

From participant to paid professional
That first project was just the beginning. A year later, Bhairavi returned as a paid mentor for the same live brief, guiding the next cohort of students. She didn’t stop there.
With one-to-one support from our team members Zoë Tynan-Campbell and Clio Delcour-Min, she developed her own tea towel and napkin range, which we now stock in our shop. Through product development sessions and regular check-ins, she gained the confidence to expand her designs into a brand.
“The support from Zoë and Clio has been so helpful,” Bhairavi shares. “They guided me step-by-step—it was like riding a bike with stabilisers! I learned so much about the process without the pressure, and now I have a clearer idea of how to grow on my own.”
Where is she now?
Today, Bhairavi continues to steadily grow her homeware brand, Thuni, with plans to supply other retailers and sell at markets. And her relationship with not just a shop continues—she’s now working in a paid year-long role with Zoë as an Interior and Design Project Assistant on the Living Archive Chelsea Flat project.
Your turn: How we can help you write your story
Stories like Bhairavi’s are why we exist. Bhairavi’s journey shows the ecosystem of support we offer: from first sale to brand building to professional placement. And every purchase made in our shop fuels this entire system.
But what does that support feel like? Our approach is both practical and personal:
- Clio Delcour-Min explains: “We make sure the first order covers all production costs. That way, designers can focus on perfecting their product, packaging, and brand without worrying about the financial risk. We want their start to be creative, not stressful.”
- Zoë Tynan-Campbell adds: “It’s about giving creators confidence and community. We help them understand the essentials—from contracts and costing to feasibility and IP. Seeing that knowledge empower them is the best part of our work.”
