What does home mean to you?
Is it a smell or a taste? Maybe a colour…
Following the success of last year’s HOME live brief, we’re back with our latest product launch, a unique collection of tea towels, napkins and an apron.
HOME is a live brief for students and graduates with no former product design experience, designed to take them from idea to production, making them feel at home with what it is to run a product-based business or launch a product. Many challenges and barriers prevent makers from being able to explore commercial products, HOME was created to provide a safe space for experimentation and development with no financial risk to the participants.
Working with Jordan and Russel, founders of interior design studio 2LG, students and graduates took part in a 6-week programme of talks, workshops and financial support to create products ready for market. The final result is a limited-edition collection of 5 tea towels, 2 sets of napkins and an apron, all inspired by the theme of home.
“Working on the Home brief again has been a joy. For us, as working professionals, being a part of this project leaves us feeling connected with new voices and useful to the wider design community. We feel passionately about championing emerging creatives, especially at a time when that feels under attack in so many ways. Building confidence in new designers fills us with hope for the future,“ Jordan and Russel from 2LG.
Why This Project Matters

For many students, this project offered a chance to step out of their comfort zones and try something new. “Being selected gave me a chance to share my aesthetic, culture and design with a wider audience. The biggest challenge was working in textile and graphic design, which was completely new to me,” shares Yuan Yang.
“The HOME Brief offered a chance to test how my photographic practice could move into a textile object while retaining the image and material qualities,” adds Kali Tiruneh.
Each piece in this collection is the result of a thoughtful and collaborative design process. The students were encouraged to explore their creativity freely while also learning about the practical aspects of product development.

This balance between structure and creativity was crucial for all participants. “I loved the opportunity to design something from the ground up while discovering what it takes to run a product business. Being involved throughout the process allowed me to combine creativity with practical thinking,” shares Gwendolyne Remme.
“Being chosen for this new venture has been incredibly fun. It shows emerging students that you can leverage creative university briefs to build your portfolio; it doesn’t always have to take the form of a traditional internship” adds Hana Abdinasir.

The project also provided invaluable insights into the business side of design. “not just a shop taught me the practical basics about selling your own product, whilst Jordan and Russel helped me push my concept into a commercial product with widened appeal,” explains Mabel Wynne.
“This experience felt like the first real step in establishing my practice,” agrees Ceren Aydin. “This opportunity therefore felt like a breakthrough, a threshold that opened a door for my practice to grow.”
“Taking part in the HOME Brief gave me the chance to explore design in a way I hadn’t experienced before, and to understand what goes into developing an idea into a product. Learning from industry professionals was especially valuable, and has given me greater confidence to explore where my practice could sit between art and design,” explains Poppy O’Brien.
