Janne Meijer Studio focuses on designing and making small-batch hand-made thrown functional ceramic wares. Working out of a shared pottery studio in London, Janne is a self-taught potter and is currently in her third year of studying for a BA (Hons) in Fine Art at Central Saint Martins.
“I enjoy making functional pieces because they bridge the gap between art and craft- it fosters connections between the consumer, the maker and the history of the craft.
My pieces are grounded in process, making and material. The designs have strong lines in them and distinctive forms, with unique and organic patterns from processes like marbling the clay or decorating with slip/glaze on the wheel.
I often have minimal and deliberate glazing, leaving parts of the clay exposed. There is a textural contrast between the unglazed and glazed sections- the raw clay feels warm and tactile in your hands whilst the glaze has a smooth, cooler finish.”
