What is your favourite aspect of running your own creative business?
The best part is the creative freedom to build products entirely around my own aesthetic. Nothing matches the happiness of receiving photos from our community or hearing how much owners love our pieces. It is incredibly rewarding to see my designs become a part of their real-life stories.
What challenges do you face working for yourself?
The greatest challenge is juggling every role as a small business owner. While product is the foundation, I must master everything from marketing to supply chain management. It is a relentless journey of learning by doing, balancing creative precision with the complex realities of running a growing brand.
What does your typical day look like?
My day starts with a morning walk with my dog. Back at my desk, I manage emails and DMs before diving into design work and factory coordination. Interspersed with creating content and website updates, I tackle a long to-do list, where unfinished tasks simply roll into the next day.
Can you briefly describe your journey since leaving UAL and setting up your business?
I conceived the brand idea during my master’s after becoming a dog parent, applying fashion design standards to pet lifestyle. After a year of navigating a fragmented industry and overcoming manufacturing hurdles, we have successfully established a high-standard supply chain that delivers the quality and precision our brand demands.
Which is your favourite product from the current collection?
It has to be the Walking Pouch, even my friends without dogs use it! Most dispensers are just uninspiring factory templates, but ours is built from real London life. When you’re at the tube with your pup, who actually wants to be fumbling for their Oyster card at the gates?
What are your hopes for the future of ZUMIZUMI?
With my womenswear background, my goal is to evolve the brand into a complete human-and-pup matching wardrobe. We have already begun this journey with our accessories, aiming to blend storytelling, aesthetics, and functionality, and creating pieces that connect a community of dog owners who value a thoughtful, mindful lifestyle.
What advice would you offer students or recent graduates wanting to start their own business?
In business, you must constantly seek exposure. Don’t be afraid to reach for opportunities, even if you face rejection. However, be selective! Saying “no” is as important as saying “yes.” If an opportunity doesn’t fit, it is better to walk away because there will always be more.
