What attracted you to your craft?
Since I was a child I have always really loved art and fashion. I found that textiles
perfectly combines the two. I love making pieces of art that can be worn. I want to
create work that is as easily hung up at an art exhibition, as it is worn for a special
occasion.
What does your typical day look like?
I’m very lucky to have a studio in The Bluecoat, Liverpool – a beautiful grade 1 listed
building built in 1716. I do most of my work here, from drawing my designs and
prints, to sewing all the outcomes. I also teach the screen print workshops at the
Bluecoat.
Does your product have an environmental focus?
All my products use 100% natural fibres and are made to order- resulting in no surplus products. There is no waste fabric, any offcuts are saved and made to create other small products. My products are printed locally in England, limiting air miles and supporting other small businesses. My scarves have been digitally printed at a very high standard, using a process that uses zero water and less energy than many others.
What is the USP (unique selling point) for your products?
I believe my illustration style, which I have spent all my life developing, is what makes my products stand out. The level of detail within my drawings allows people to enjoy their products in their own way.
Where do you find your inspiration for designs?
I am very inspired by the place I have grown up, Merseyside. Particularly Liverpool
city centre and the seaside we have here. I am also very inspired by Art and Fashion
from the 1960s, which you can tell by just stepping foot in my home!
Please can you provide a little more info on how your interest in design started and
developed?
When I was a child my Mum said she always had to bring pencils and paper wherever
we went as I always wanted to draw. I have never stopped since, and feel very
fortunate to have kept it with me all the way through to studying at Central Saint
Martins, where I could really come into my own as a Textile Designer.
Lady Sunshine Scrunchie
A colourful hair accessories, accented with a delicate lace trim for an added touch of femininity. Each scrunchie is meticulously handcrafted and stitched by Charlie to ensure the highest quality. The perfect bold accent to any outfit.
Do you have any favourite items in the collection?
The Skinny Scarf is definitely my favourite! It can be worn as a neck scarf, headband ,
belt, tied into a tie or whatever else you’d like to do with it. It has been designed to be
versatile and multi-directional – I am very proud of how it came out.
How would you summarise your collection in a few sentences?
An immersive look into the world that Charlie Ann Buxton has been creating and a piece of Sunday Morning to carry round with you.
What are your hopes for the future?
I hope that my business continues to grow and sustain itself. I am really excited to
keep designing and I feel as though I keep improving as an artist and I want to make sure
this continues. I have begun branching out into other products, such as hats and
bags, which is something I am keen to explore further.
